Matching pinky promise hands on upper arms
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
Two matching black outline tattoos show pairs of hands hooked little finger to little finger. Each design sits on the upper arm near the elbow, and the arms are linked so the two tattoos sit side by side. The thin, uniform linework is unshaded and set against a dark background with a plant behind.

The river had taken the old bridge at Thrane the spring the sisters turned sixteen, and the ferry that replaced it charged a silver penny a crossing. Maud and Edda had no pennies. What they had was the wall. It ran the length of the water on both banks, built of grey stone by the king's masons, and where two blocks had settled apart there was a gap no wider than a wrist. Every dawn for three summers Maud stood on the west bank and Edda stood on the east, and each put a little finger through the hole and hooked it round the other's.

They had made the promise the day Edda walked off toward the weaving houses of Caddon with a bundle of linen and a sack of barley bread. Hold, Maud had said, and Edda had laughed and said the river was too wide for holding, so they would hook instead, because a hook could be felt through stone. Nobody in Thrane believed it could carry anything. The old women said a promise made through a gap in a wall would be broken by the first hard wind, and the boys dared each other to put their hands through and see.
The winter the ice came early, Maud came down to the wall with frost on her eyelashes and found the hole empty. She waited until the light went grey. Then she pushed her finger through and felt nothing but the cold bite of the water beyond. On the third morning a scrap of red wool had been knotted round the stone on her side, and her own name was stitched into it in Edda's uneven hand.
Maud tied the wool round her little finger, pushed it through the gap, and sat down on the frozen bank to wait. Something on the far side tugged back.
