Matching portrait tattoos on both feet
Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two stylised female portraits with long dark hair and patterned dresses cover the tops of both feet, one on each foot. The bold black outlines are filled with solid black and grey tones, with small stars and crosses placed around the designs. The feet are photographed on a textured floor with red painted toenails, and a dark tattoo is partly visible on the ankle at the top right.

Snow had closed the pass at Coll de Ferro by noon, and Marta Vidal, who had carried her paint box over it for eleven winters, knew better than to argue with the mule. She sat on a flat stone with two wooden panels across her knees and waited for the light to change, because the women on them were not finished until it did.

The widow in the valley had paid in goat cheese and a promise of firewood. She wanted her two daughters painted as they would look grown, with dark hair falling forward like curtains, dresses sprigged with small flowers, and stars scattered in the spaces between them for the nights they would be apart. Marta had laid down the outlines in black ink because the widow could not afford blue, and because black, she had decided, was honest about what it was holding back.
A boy came up the path behind her, breathing hard, carrying a lantern he had no use for in daylight. He looked from one panel to the other and asked which girl was the elder. Marta told him she had painted them to be the same woman, one who stayed in the valley and one who went down to the coast and never sent word, and that she had not yet decided which was which.
The boy considered this with the seriousness of someone who had been told too many true things. Then Marta lifted the second panel and set it against the first so the two faces looked at each other across the seam, and the snow on the stone began to slide off in long pale sheets. The boy nodded as if she had said something sensible, and the mule, at last, started down.
