Three matching owl tattoos on forearms

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Three arms are pressed together, each carrying a small owl tattoo drawn in thin black linework. The middle owl has two small red hearts beside it, and the right owl sits beneath a blue-grey crescent moon with small star accents. The shading is minimal, with the owls shown mainly as outlines and the composition close-cropped on the forearms.

The fence posts along the Tarrant Flats road had carried owls for as long as Nell could remember, and tonight there were three of them, sat so close their wings almost touched. She slowed the van to a crawl and wound the window down. The air smelled of cooling tarmac and sage.

'They're not sleeping,' said Pip from the passenger seat, her boots up on the dashboard against the rules. 'Owls don't sit in a row like that.'

Nell had driven this stretch of the old cattle route every Thursday for eleven years, carrying seed packets and cheap wine to the towns that had dried up around the reservoir. She knew owls kept to themselves. These three were different. The one in the middle had a pair of red hearts pinned beside it, as if someone had dropped them there on purpose, and the one on the end sat under a silver crescent with a scatter of stars, like it had been hung up for the night shift.

'Mum used to say a pair of owls means you're being watched over,' Pip said. 'Three means someone's keeping the books.'

Nell laughed, and the middle bird turned its head all the way round, the way owls do, and looked straight at the van. She put the brake on. Somewhere past the cattle grid a lorry horn sounded twice, long and then short, the signal they'd agreed at the depot meaning the reservoir road was open. Nell lifted a hand to the birds, then to the dark, and eased the van forward into the light starting to come up behind the hills.
