They did as they were told for a month. Edric cut a plain shape with a bulge on one side and a hollow on the other, and he cut it deep. Hal cut his half to fit, but he had ideas of his own. He pressed a sliver of red ochre into the centre of Edric's piece before it went to the fire, and when Edric saw it he said nothing, because the abbot's rule was about the shape and not the colour.
When the seals were pressed, the wax took the outline clean, but the red had worked into the grain of the brass and came off on every letter that left the house. The abbot held one up to the window and frowned. Then he laid the two halves together and found that the red sat exactly where the cut of Hal's half went round it, a heart with one side missing, waiting to be filled. "Two men who would not speak," he said, "and one of them has painted the answer." He sent them both to the refectory to eat together for a year.
