Small red heart on the inner wrist

Other · Mixed · Photo

A small heart is tattooed on the inner wrist, with a solid red fill and a thin black outline. The lines are neat and the shading is flat, with no added detail inside the shape. The heart sits near the centre of a pale, plain area of skin against a red background.

Come closer, the fire is low and I am old. Brother Anselm kept his ink in a cracked horn pot beside the vellum, and the abbot forbade him any colour but black, for the rule was plain about vanity. So he mixed the red in secret from madder root the infirmarian grew behind the kitchen wall, and he hid the pot under his sleeve when the bell went for vespers.

The book was a psalter for the king's sister, who had sent three letters asking for lively margins. Anselm drew saints with long noses and a fox making off with a goose. On every page he left one small thing unfinished, and by Lent the copyist's boy had noticed. "Who is the heart for?" the boy asked, peering at a crimson shape no bigger than a bean, outlined in soot-black and tucked beside the word for mercy.

Anselm told him the truth: it was for whoever turned the page and stopped. The abbot found it in the spring, held the leaf to the window, and said nothing for so long that the candle guttered. Then he asked how much madder was left in the pot.

The psalter went south with its fox and its saints, and a heart the size of a fingernail that nobody at court ever mentioned. Anselm kept the pot. The abbot left the cellar door unlatched, which in that house was the same as a blessing.
