Three pixel hearts on a wrist
Other · Mixed · Photo
Three small pixel-art hearts sit side by side in a horizontal row on the wrist. Each heart has a bold black stepped outline and a flat pink fill with no visible shading. The pale skin and dark magenta backdrop make the pink hearts stand out, and the tattoo is centred in the frame.

You have been counting hearts since the Halden drift took the port lights, and by the third week on the salvage tug you can read the wrist display without looking. Three pink pips glow above your pulse line. Two are full. The third has been flickering since the hull breach at Tessa Deep, a stutter like a bad connection, and Oyelaran swears the medbay can fix it when the dock rotates back into range.

The tug's old arcade cabinet still hums in the galley, a relic bolted to the deck when the ship was built for a theme park orbit that never opened. Nobody plays it except Pim, a nine-year-old who came aboard as a stowaway in a crate of fuel filters. Pim has your hearts memorised from watching you. Each evening Pim recites the same rule: a heart is a spare life, you only lose one when the scrap crane misses its catch, and you always get a second try if you ask nicely.
On the last shift, the crane drops a girder across the airlock. The third heart goes dark. You feel nothing, only the galley lights swinging and a voice counting down through the bulkhead. You reach for the cabinet controls out of habit, press the button that restarts the game, and a sound like a tiny cheer fills the room.
Pim is holding the wrist display. Two hearts are glowing again, and the third has been handed over from a band that is now the only one left flickering. You take the small hand and do not say what it cost.
