Matching red balloon tattoos on two calves

Fine line · Calf · Mixed · Photo

The image shows two near-identical tattoos of a red balloon with a thin, wavy dark blue string, one on each of two people's lower legs. The balloons are filled in with solid red ink and have small highlights, while the strings are drawn in fine, single-line work that curls near the bottom. The photograph is taken at close range against pink-toned skin, with denim visible at the top edge of the frame.

The string was the hard part. Ines had spent three nights on the hydroponics deck trying to fix the knot in the filament, and each time the thread snapped under the tension of the spool. Dani watched from the hatch with a mug of tea gone cold, saying nothing, because she had learned on the way out from Earth that Ines did not want advice when her hands were busy.

The balloon itself had come from an old supply crate, a sealed bag of latex stamped with a manufacturer that no longer existed. It had survived eleven years in the cold store behind the ration racks, and when they finally pumped it up with the last cylinder of helium, it rose to the ceiling of the mess and stayed there, bumping gently against the lights. Ines said it was a waste of gas. Dani said they had plenty of gas and not enough reasons.

They made the second one from the leftover scrap of the first, cutting the red film thin enough to catch the lamp. The blue string was a strand pulled from the sail of the emergency kite, ten metres of it, and Ines tied the curl at the bottom so it would fall the way a real string falls in the water tanks, loosely and forgiving. When both balloons hung side by side above the galley table, the room looked like a place where somebody had decided to celebrate something.

On the morning the relay pinged from home, the signal was short and clipped, and it said the colony at Halden had been granted its first birth allocation. Dani read it twice, then reached up and tugged her balloon down by the string. Ines did the same. They held the strings together, two blue curls wrapping around their wrists, and let the red ones bob between them until the ship's lights dimmed for night.
