Matching infinity tattoos on fingers

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two pairs of hands are interlaced over grey trousers, with a small black infinity symbol tattooed on one finger of each of two hands. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the tattoos are a similar size and placed in matching positions. The image is a warm-toned phone photograph against a wooden floor, with the hands filling most of the frame.

The stitch wouldn't close. Ada pulled the thread taut through the third signature and watched the loop slide off the bone folder again, the way it had all afternoon, while the gas fire ticked in the corner of the bindery on Cutler Street. Ruth was at the other end of the bench with the ledger's cover boards clamped in the press, humming something from the radio that she kept getting wrong.

"Mr Pell did it in one go," Ruth said. "Round and back and round again. He said the kettle stitch was the only one that never really finished, so you had to decide where to stop."

Ada had heard this before. Old Pell had died in February with his spectacles still on, and since then the two of them had kept the shop going on wedding albums and council minutes, arguing over every knot. Ruth had a letter in her coat pocket from a bindery in Leeds that wanted someone who could work fast. She hadn't mentioned it since Tuesday, and Ada had decided not to mention that she'd noticed.

They finished the ledger on the last Friday of the month, with the light going orange across the floorboards. Ada ran the thread through the final fold and drew the needle back up, and the two ends came out level on the spine, one of them hers and one of Ruth's, because they had sewn the last loop together with a hand each on the thread. Ruth pressed a card into the endpaper with her thumb, and on it she had written both their names inside a figure of eight, the pen lifting only once, at the crossing.
