The greenhouse smelled of tomato leaves and warm tarmac, and my grandfather sat on an upturned crate turning a Rubik's cube over and over in his hands. Its faces had faded at different rates, so one side looked like an old sweet wrapper and another like a rained-on postcard. Nobody solves one by looking at it, he said, and nobody solves one by accident.

I was nine and sulking because the seedlings wouldn't come up. He handed me the cube he'd bought in 1981 from a market stall in Leeds, its white face gone grey at the corners, and told me to fix the top row before the kettle boiled. I twisted it wrong for twenty minutes, pink and teal squares tangling into a patchwork that looked like the sea through a windscreen.

He took it back without checking it and turned it once, twice, and the blue came round to meet the blue. Your gran did the other side in a day, he said. Half of it is knowing which pieces you've been lying about. Then he gave it back and went to see about the kettle.

By August the beans had reached the gutter, and I had got the top row right twice without him watching. The cube lives on my windowsill now, beside the one I bought when he moved into the home, and every morning I turn a face toward the light to see whether anything has shifted. Mostly it hasn't. I keep turning it anyway.
