Outlined cube on an upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a single cube drawn in thin black outline on the outer upper arm, shown in three-quarter view with the top and two visible side faces. The linework is even and fine with no shading, and the skin is light against a dark sleeve. The background is out of focus, keeping attention on the tattoo.

Sit down, love, the kettle's only just gone and the corridor won't miss you for ten minutes. Ward Four is asleep, mostly. You want a story to keep your eyes open, so I'll give you the one my grandfather gave me, the night the boiler went in the cellar and we sat by the coal with nothing to do but talk.

He was a joiner in Hull, and he had a customer who ordered a box. Not a chest, not a drawer, just a box with six square sides, no lid and no hinge. The man wanted it to hold his wife's letters. He paid in advance and never came back for it. So my grandfather built it, and when he had finished he found he could see straight through the corners, as though the edges were ropes he had pulled tight from the outside in.
Here's the part they never put in the leaflets. He drew the thing on the back of a receipt, one line for each edge, and the drawing kept turning when he looked away. Top face, then front, then side, and then it was a window, then a room, then a box again. He said it was the drawing that was clever, not the wood. Every line was thin as a hair, and he would not shade it, because shading tells you which side the light is on, and he did not want to decide.
The customer's letters were never returned, so the box stayed on his bench for forty years. When he died we found it empty, and I still don't know which face is the bottom. Pass me that clipboard, will you? Ward Four's bell has started.
