Matching script tattoos on two wrists
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands with raised thumbs are shown, each wrist carrying a small, matching black script design with a looped, monogram-like form. The linework is fine and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The close crop places both tattoos in the lower half of the frame against a dark table, with a glass of ice and a sleeve in the background.

Dear Tess, the pump on Haverlock Street gave out this morning, so I have the afternoon and a stub of carpenter's pencil to write with. The tide has reached the second step of the old bank and the water is the colour of weak tea. Before I started, I checked the lintel tally and then, out of habit, turned my wrist over to look at the little looped script you inked beside mine the summer we were nineteen. It still holds its line. Nothing down here has been so stubborn.

Our grandmother's family cast bells in the foundry at the top of the hill, and the monogram was theirs, stamped on every clapper before the ground gave way. She used to say the loops were a promise that the note would carry further than the metal. We thought it was a joke when we had them done in that noisy bar, the ice in our glasses clicking, both of us raising a thumb at the barman as if the gesture were a password. It turned out to be one. The tug crews used the same signal to say a line was fast.
This morning a flat-bottomed boat came round the corner by the chapel, a boy at the tiller with a grey tarpaulin over his knees. I was on the roof with the salvage hook. When he saw me I raised my hand with the thumb up, and before I could think, he raised his back, then turned his own wrist so I could see the same loops. He was too far off to read more than that. He pushed on towards the river.
So I am writing to say the bells may still be ringing downstream, if the boy was right. Come home by the chapel road and look for the tug with the red stripe. I will keep my thumb up until you answer. Yours, Ines.
