Small lettering on wrist and finger tattoos
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two raised hands are photographed against a plain blue sky, with gold rings on several fingers and a chain bracelet on the wrist. The visible tattoo is black lettering on the inner wrist, partly cut off and rotated so only some letters are legible, with a tiny black cross-like mark and a small line on the side of one finger. The image is sharp and evenly lit, and the composition is simple, with the ink standing out against the blue background.

The flags had gone soft in the spray, so I stood on the seawall with my arms up and spoke to the Morven with my hands instead. Uncle Ivo had taught me the alphabet across the kitchen table that winter, but nobody had taught me how long a person could hold her arms in the air before they began to shake. He had written TIDE on the inside of my wrist in biro that morning, so I could check my letters without taking my eyes off the boat.

The skipper wanted to know whether the ebb would clear the bar at Gull Rock before dark. I answered with the proper shapes, then the small cross on my first finger, which meant repeat, and I repeated them twice because the wind kept pushing my elbows wide. Across the water a man I had never met lifted his arm in reply, slow and patient, the way you would for a child learning her sums. Somebody on the quay shouted that the tide was turning early, and I knew the answer before he finished.
When the Morven swung for the harbour mouth I let my arms drop and looked down at my wrist. The sea air had run the biro, and what was left read IDE, the T washed clean away. I had signalled the right tide all afternoon, but only because I had known it in my head, and the boat came home anyway.
