Two people's forearms, each with a small black outline of a state-shaped map tattooed just below the elbow.

Matching state outline tattoos on forearms

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two people stand side by side with their arms linked, and each forearm near the elbow carries a matching small outline of a state-shaped map. The lines are thin and even, and the ink reads as dark grey or black against the skin. The composition is a close, casual phone photo that focuses on the two tattoos, with a grey knit sweater on one side and a plaid shirt on the other.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody in Alder Falls could draw a state from memory, so Wren and Dot Pruitt tried it on a paper napkin the night before Dot's bus left for Denver. Wren made the panhandle too thin and Dot said it looked like a boot somebody had stood on. They argued over the coffee refills until the waitress flicked the booth lights off, and then they argued about the lights.

Three weeks later they sat in the chair above the hardware store while Harlan Mott, who had inked half the county's cattle brands onto gloves and jackets, studied the napkin under his lamp. He said he would only do it if the lines were right, so they traced it onto tracing paper with a borrowed biro and Dot pressed too hard, tearing the corner. Harlan asked where the outline should sit. Dot said the soft part of the elbow, where you could feel your pulse. Wren said the crook, where the arm bends to hold on to something. Harlan picked the crook, because the other place would blur, and he was right about that.

Dot got on the bus with a sleeve pulled down over the fresh ink. Wren kept the napkin pinned behind the till at the diner, under a calendar from the feed store, and whenever a trucker asked what the funny shape was she rolled up her cuff and showed him. Years later a letter came with a photo of Dot's arm beside her own, two small outlines on two bare elbows, the same crooked edge in every line. Wren propped it against the sugar jar and read it twice, then went back to the grill, where the eggs were already burning at the edges.
