Matching stick figure tattoos on forearms
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two forearms each carry a solid black stick figure in a running or climbing pose, placed on either side of a thin vertical line. The figures are simple filled silhouettes with no shading, and the lines are fine and coloured, one orange and one blue. The pair sits side by side on a plain skin background with a dark backdrop.

Sit closer, the rain's getting in under the awning, and I'll tell it before the stallholders start shouting for us to move. You know the wall behind the fish stall, the one with the crack running straight down its middle? Nobody painted that crack. Two sign-writers, Dora Feeney and her brother Ruben, were hired to freshen the hoardings, and they quarrelled over the job before the first tin was open.

Dora wanted the line in orange, because orange was the colour of the lamps on the night ferry and she missed it. Ruben wanted blue, cold as the river in January. They settled it by doing it their own way. She painted a little figure on the left, running flat out with its arms swinging, and he painted one on the right, pressed against the line and climbing as if the far side were a ladder with no rungs. Every morning the rain thinned the paint, and every morning the two figures were still there, one on each side, neither able to reach the other.
The stallholders said it was daft. Then a girl selling buttons noticed that when the rain came hard enough, the blue ran down and pooled in the crack, and the orange bled across to meet it, and for an hour the two colours mixed in the gutter where nobody could tell whose side was whose. Ruben sent a postcard to Dora's flat in Hull that said only: the line is wet, come and see. She never replied. He stood there every evening after that, palm flat to the brick, waiting for the water to decide.
