Matching split heart tattoos on two feet

Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare feet are shown side by side, each with a heart outline tattoo on the inner arch. The two hearts are split, with each half drawn on a different foot so that they join to form one heart. The linework is a single bold, slightly tapered line with no shading, and the photograph is in black and white, so the ink appears dark grey to black.

Dora had the tin snips out before the kettle was warm, working at the lid of the old Christmas biscuit tin on the kitchen table. Frank would be on the 7:40 to Carlisle by eight, his call-up papers folded in his inside pocket, and she had decided he was leaving with something better than a handshake.

She drew the heart with the blunt end of a pencil, the way their mother cut pastry rounds, then cut it in one long curve so the edges still bit. Down the middle she ran her thumbnail, pressing hard, and the line she made was crooked on purpose. Frank watched from the doorway in his shirtsleeves, saying nothing, which was how she knew he was trying not to laugh.

"It won't fit back together," he said at last.

"It will if you keep your side straight," she said, and handed him his half. The metal was cold and gave a little under his fingers. They laid the two pieces on the lino where the morning light came through the window, toes nearly touching, and the gap between them closed into a single shape that looked as if it had always been one thing.

Outside, the 7:40 sounded for the crossing. Frank slid his half in with the papers, and Dora kept hers in the drawer with the teaspoons, where she could reach it every morning and know exactly where the other one was.
