Matching sisters infinity heart ankle tattoos
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two matching small tattoos sit on the inner ankles of two people, each showing an infinity symbol joined to a heart outline with the word sisters written in script inside the loop. The linework is thin and solid black, with no shading or fill. The skin is light and the background is plain and soft, so the black ink stands out clearly in a close, centred composition.

The ferry from Oban was running late again, so Nell sat on the slipway with a tin of shortbread on her knees and counted the gulls lined up along the harbour wall. Edie's letter was in her coat pocket, folded so often the creases had gone soft as cloth. She had read it on the bus, and again at the shop, and once more while the kettle boiled and forgot to whistle.

The drawing was on the back of the envelope, done in blue biro with a steady hand. Two hearts knotted together through a figure of eight, and inside the loop, in Edie's looping script, the word sisters. It was a joke from when they were girls who had sworn on the church steps they would never be parted. Their mother had said that was not how loops worked, and Edie had said that was the point of a loop, you could always find your way back round.
Nell had not answered the first letter. She had not answered the second. Now the ferry's horn sounded out past the point, low and cross, and the first passengers came down the gangway with their bags held up against the wind. Nell stood, brushed the sand off her skirt and went to the wall where the post box was painted the colour of old jam. She took out a blank card, drew the same knot in pencil and the same two words. Then she wrote underneath, in her own hand, Come home for the tide on Friday. I will meet the boat.
She posted it before she could cross anything out.
