Matching Tweedledum and Tweedledee forearms

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two forearms are shown side by side, each carrying a standing figure of Tweedledum or Tweedledee, the round, capped twins from Lewis Carroll's Alice books. The figures use dense hatched and cross-hatched linework to shade their bulging bellies and clothing, in an engraved illustration style. The tattoos are black ink only, with the figures centred on each forearm against a plain, lightly lit background.

Now sit still and listen, because the twins of Ashby Drift never let a story go unmended. There were two brothers on the Drift, Dan and Dick Muckle, round as bolsters and near as alike as two pennies. They walked the same shift, wore the same brown cap with the same dent, and they had not agreed on a single thing since the night they were born in the same back bedroom.

The trouble started over a lamp. Dan said the flame in the cage was dim, so the gas must be low. Dick said it burned as bright as ever, and it was only Dan's eyes gone soft. They stood at the shaft mouth shouting across the tubs until the overman came up with his watch in his fist and sent them both down together, which was the first thing in forty years they had done without a row. At the bottom they had to hold each other's sleeves to find the way.

Down in the workings the roof began to talk, that low cracking the old men called the mountain singing. Dick wanted to run for the stone wall. Dan wanted to sit and let it finish. They quarrelled in the dark until the timber gave, and the pair of them were pressed into the same narrow gap under a girder, belly to belly, with nowhere to go but towards each other.

When the rescue men cut them out eleven hours later, the brothers were still arguing about whose fault the dark was. If you go to Ashby Drift today, you'll see two shadows on the wall of the lamp room, one standing a little nearer the other than it needs to, and neither of them will move aside.
