Two cats outline on a lower leg
Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A single-line outline tattoo shows two cats sitting side by side, one leaning its head against the other, with a collar on the smaller cat. The linework is thin and even in black ink, with no shading or fill. The tattoo is centred on a pale lower leg against a dark red background.

The ice held the narrowboat Constance at Hatherton Lock for nine days, and on each of them Bramble sat on the roof hatch with his tail wrapped round his feet, listening for a bell that had gone quiet on the first frost.

Dot had gone after a moorhen across the lock gates and out onto the frozen cut, and nobody had seen her since except the lock keeper, Eli Marsh, who swore he had heard a small brass jingle from inside the sluice house. Agnes had searched the towpath with a lamp until her fingers would not bend. Bramble had watched her do it, then climbed down the ladder himself and followed the faint ring of the bell through the snow.
He found the sluice house door left open a hand's width, and Dot beneath the paddle gear, her collar snagged on an iron cleat and too frightened to shift. He worked the buckle loose with his teeth, the way he had once opened a tin of pilchards, and then he lay down against her with his head across her shoulders and stayed there while the cold came up through the boards.
Eli found them an hour later by torchlight, the cat and the kitten curled into one warm lump, and carried them both back along the towpath. The ice broke on the Tuesday. Now, whenever Dot leaps onto the roof, her bell rings out across the water, and Bramble, half asleep with his head tipped against hers, lifts one ear and does not move.
