Matching Virginia outline tattoos

Fine line · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

Two people show matching tattoos of the outline of the state of Virginia, each with a small solid black heart placed in the centre of the map. The left tattoo sits beside a red lip print on the hip or upper thigh, above white underwear, while the right tattoo is on the outer forearm. The thin black linework is even and crisp, with flat solid colour only in the red lips, and the photograph is a close, slightly angled shot.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ferry out of Norfolk left at six, and Maud Thornber was already at the rail when the sky came up grey over the Elizabeth River. She had a sheet of ruled paper folded inside her coat, and on it she had drawn the state the way their father used to draw it on the backs of seed invoices: the long jaw of the coast, the mountains crumpled up at the western edge, the bays notched in like bites. She put a small black heart where Richmond sat, because that was where she was going, then pressed her lips to the corner of the page and left a red print behind.

Edie got the letter on the Eastern Shore three days later, while she was sorting crab pots in the wet shed behind the feed store. The paper smelled of diesel and cloves. She read it standing up, then again sitting on an upturned bucket, and laughed until the gulls lifted off the piling. The kiss had smudged a little in the post, so it looked less like a mouth and more like someone trying very hard not to cry.

That evening she took the ballpoint from beside the till and drew the same outline on a strip of card, copying Maud's coast from memory and getting the bays in the right places. She put the heart too far east and too low, and decided it was right anyway. Then she wrote Maud's name beneath it in the careful capitals they had both learned from the same schoolroom, pinned it above the register, and sealed a reply with a kiss of her own. The ink was still tacky when the six o'clock horn sounded out on the water.
