The 6.42 to Carlisle is late again, so I've got time to write this on the back of a timetable while Mr Dobbs argues with the ticket machine. You'll be pleased to hear it finally ate a twenty. Nobody looked after that machine the way you did, so it sulks at me instead.

I went up to the old signal box on Tuesday, the one with the broken latch. Your tea mug is still on the shelf above the levers, with a ring of dried milk and a note that says 'don't touch, Marnie's'. I didn't touch it. I sat in your chair and watched the gates come down for the milk tanker, and I thought about the afternoon we had the little circles done at the parlour on Grange Road, both of us swearing we'd never be the sort of women who matched.

Half of mine is solid and half is open, and the wee dot on each side is the bit that holds the other. The man with the needle said that's the whole point, that each side goes looking for what it lacks. I told him he'd got the wrong end of the stick. You were always the dark half, and I was always the one who needed you to see by.

So here is my plan. The Carlisle train pulls into Platform Two at ten past seven on Saturdays. Get on it, or get off it, but either way, come and stand where we used to wait. I'll be the one with the ticket and the two teas going cold.
