Matching teepee tattoos on forearms
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two small matching tattoos sit on the inner forearms of two people whose hands are clasped together below them. Each shows a teepee outline with shaded vertical lines and a dark rounded base, a small crescent moon above and a tuft of grass beside it, drawn in fine, even black linework with light hatching. The black ink on pale skin is shown against dark clothing and floor, with the two arms and hands centred in the frame.

By the time we'd lashed the poles at the top, the sky over the field had gone the colour of wet slate, and Nell was on her knees hammering pegs in with a rock because we'd forgotten the mallet.

We were meant to be at the midsummer gathering by dusk, but the lane had washed out and the farmer's gate was chained. So we pitched on the scrubby bank above the stream, where one side of the ground refused to be flat and a single tuft of grass stood up defiantly beside the door flap. Nell said it was the best spot in the valley, because the moon would sit right over the peak when it rose.
It did. A thin crescent hung above the poles while our fire, built from damp kindling, spat and sulked. We sat inside on a rug that smelled of old horse, passing a tin mug of tea back and forth, and talked about the summer we'd decided we were sisters, a decision neither of us could date exactly.
Near midnight Nell crawled out to check the guy ropes and came back with grass seeds stuck to her jumper, laughing. "Still standing," she said. I didn't tell her I'd been lying awake listening for the wind to take the whole thing, and that it never did.
