Matching Yours and Mine script on wrists
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two inner wrists are pressed together, each carrying a black script word: Yours on the left and Mine on the right. The linework is fine and fluid with some variation in stroke weight, and the ink is solid black on pale skin. The shallow focus and warm, moody lighting keep attention on the two words, with the hands framing the lower edge of the composition.

The sign-writer's brushes were still wet when Mr Haddow sent me down to the quay with the gold leaf pot, so I was the one who watched Ruth Tremayne argue with the tide over her boats. She had two herring boats moored hull to hull at Gullane Cove, and she wanted them named before the spring fleet went out: one YOURS, one MINE, in the looping hand Haddow kept for wedding boards.

Jack Tremayne had bought the second boat the autumn before and had not spoken to her since the price was settled. I said Haddow would charge double for a pair, and Ruth said she was not paying for a row, she was paying for a sentence. He laid the first word on the starboard board in one slow pull of the brush, and the gold caught the lamplight so that the letters seemed to lift off the wood.
Jack came down at dusk with a tin of tea and stood on the quay reading the two names. For a while neither of them said anything. Then he stepped across the gap between the hulls, which was no wider than a plank, and took her hand as if it were the most ordinary thing in the world, and the gulls on the harbour wall went quiet.
By morning the boats had swung on the same tide, bows to the same wind, and nobody in Gullane could say which one had been named first.
