Matryoshka doll tattoo on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a matryoshka nesting doll sits on the forearm, showing a rounded face and a dress decorated with a flower motif. The linework is thin and uniform in black ink, with no shading or added colour. The arm rests across a pale blue floral bedsheet, with a hand and blurred hair at the top of the frame.

Dear Marta,

The snow has shut the pass again, so the coach won't come up until Thursday, and I have nothing to do but count the guests, who are three, and the dolls, who are five where there should be six. You will remember the set Father brought back from Kostroma, the painted ones that open at the waist. Mrs Feeney has been dusting them every morning as if they might wander off.

Yesterday she found the smallest one gone from the sill. We turned the parlour upside down. Mr Ashdown, who is writing a book about glaciers and has been very patient with the draughts, offered to take the stove apart. Then the kitchen boy said he had seen a little wooden face looking out of the coal scuttle, and there it was, lying in the black dust with its flowered skirt gone grey.

I wiped her clean on my apron and stood her at the front of the row, where the window could see her. Then I did something foolish. I took the others apart, one inside the next, until all six stood in a line from tallest to smallest, and I could not bear to close them again. Mrs Feeney says leaving them open is bad luck. I told her the house has enough of its own.

Come at Easter if the road allows. Bring the pattern book, because I want to paint a flower on the next one myself, and bring that terrible pipe tobacco for Mr Ashdown, who has promised to explain the ice to me one more time.

Your loving sister, Ada
