Sit down, lad, and stop fiddling with that chalk. You want to know how a tape measure gets to be older than the shop? Pass me the iron first. It has to be warm for this kind of story, same as the wool.

The winter the mill closed, a girl came up Harrow Street in a coat her mother had turned three times. She wanted a new one for the train to Hull, and she wanted it by Friday. I laid my brass-ended tape along the cloth, the one with the numbers rubbed off the far end, and called out the lengths. Thirteen at the collar, I said. Fourteen, she corrected me, the lining's gone further than the wool. I wrote down what she told me, not what the tape said, and that was the first mistake I made that week.

She came back on the Thursday night, the gas lamps humming outside, and asked me to sew something inside the hem. Not a name. A folded timetable, pressed flat, with the platform number and the hour. I told her the tape would never sit true against a thing so thin. She said it did not need to. She only wanted it close to her, measured against the body of the coat, where nobody would think to look.

I sewed it in by lamplight, stitch by stitch, the way my father taught me. When I finished I took the old tape down and ran it along the hem one last time. It stopped exactly at eighteen, as if the cloth had been waiting for the distance. She was on the early train before the shop lights came on, and the coat went with her.
