I have been thinking about your father's rules for the boat. Whatever comes over the side, let it come. Whatever stays in the hold, let it stay. Whatever goes over the rail in a gale, let it go. He painted those words on the lid of the tackle box in white enamel, and I used to read them out loud to the cat while he mended nets. I thought they were the saddest things I had ever heard. The ferry is in sight now, a grey smudge with a bent funnel. I have the tin with the lighthouse keys in my coat pocket, and I have decided to keep them. The rest of the things from the cottage I left with Mrs Haskett, who said she would sell the kettle to the man from Wick. Let him have it.

If you come down in the spring, bring the good tea, not the bags. I will be the one on the quay pretending not to look for you.
