Melting clock on a crescent moon at the ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of a lower leg and foot resting on striped bedding, showing a tattoo of a melting clock draped over a crescent moon. The linework is thin and clean, with light grey shading on the clock face and moon edge. The tattoo sits centrally on the shin near the ankle, and the warm-toned image is cropped to show the leg and foot.

Dr Okafor said the building was settling on its foundations. I just wrote the correct time on the handover sheet and trusted the sheet more than the wall.

The night the moon came low over the multistorey car park, pale as a dinner plate, the clock began to sag. I saw it from the drinks machine: the hands drooping like wet paper, the twelve slipping down the face toward the sill. Through the window the crescent hung on the car park's edge, and the clock seemed draped across it, the way you'd drape a wet tea towel over a radiator to dry.

Mr Dacre in bay three was awake, as he always was at that hour, counting ceiling tiles out loud. He asked me what time it was. I told him the truth, which was that I didn't know, and he laughed so hard the monitor alarm went off. We sat together while the moon slid behind the floodlights and the clock straightened itself with a small, wet click.

At seven the day staff came in with their coats still cold. The clock said quarter past six. Bev checked her phone and said we'd lost nothing at all, and I didn't argue. I only noticed that the moon had stayed exactly where it was, hooked on the car park roof, and the clock still hung from it a little lower than before.
