Metallic temporary tattoos on linked arms
Geometric · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
Several people link their arms together, and their skin shows metallic gold and silver temporary tattoos. The designs include overlapping scale patterns on the upper arm and shoulder, a lattice band on the forearm, and small black quatrefoil motifs. The shot is taken close up from above, with the bright foil designs contrasting against warm skin and patterned clothing.

Mind the step, it's the loose one that's been loose since my father's time. Sit where the lamp reaches. You want the story of the three scales, the ones that came up out of the Tagus on a night the river ran silver, and I'll tell it the way Mother told it to me, with her hands doing what mine do now.

There were three sisters in Vila Nova who sold salt fish from a barrow by the customs house, and they were never once seen without their arms hooked through each other. The fishmongers said it was for warmth. The customs men said it was for smuggling. Nobody asked them, because the youngest could tell a counterfeit coin by the ring of it and the middle one could read the weather off a gull. The eldest wore a copper band on her upper arm, all overlapping scales, and she swore a mermaid had given it to her in exchange for a name.
On the night of the great fog, a boat came in without a light. Its captain wanted the sisters' barrow moved from the quay so his crates could pass unseen. They refused him, linked arms and stood fast, and the fog itself seemed to lean in to listen. When the captain reached for the eldest, the scales on her arm caught the lamplight and flashed like a shoal turning all at once, and the man stepped back into the water as if the river had called his name.
In the morning the sisters' barrow was still on the quay, the salt fish dry and the copper bands gleaming. The boat was never found. And if you go down to the steps at low tide, you will see the lattice marks on the stones where three arms once held together, and the scales still shine, if you're willing to look for them.
