A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, you with the wet boots, for the wind up here takes the ends off sentences and I will not shout this twice. The pass is called Sorrel Neck by the herders and the Saddle of Teeth by the men who cut the road, and both names are true. Last winter a salt caravan came over it at dusk with eleven mules and a girl walking at the back who was nobody's daughter that anyone could name.

Her name was Ilse Varga, though she gave it only once, to the toll-keeper, and he wrote it wrong. She carried a tin box with three things in it: a crescent of silver the colour of a fish's belly, a sprig of gold thorn, and a small star cut from the same metal, so the moon and the star could be sewn onto one thread. Each night, when the caravan made fire in the lee of the rock, she unwrapped the box and held the pieces to the flame until the metal gave back the light in a line too thin for the eye, the way frost catches the sun on a wire.

The muleteers thought she was mad, and then they thought she was lucky. Lucky she was not. At the summit the snow came sideways and the lead mule went over the edge with the salt and the bells. When the girl knelt at the drop and opened the box, the moon lay down in her palm and the star turned to face the hollow below, and the wind, which had been screaming, stopped as if someone had put a hand over its mouth.

So they walked down by the star, and the mules followed the moon, and every one of them came out at the valley mill with ice in its mane. The girl sold the silver crescent to pay the toll. The box is still in the valley, I am told, and the man who keeps it will not open it, which is the only sensible thing anybody in this story has done. The fire is low now, so someone must fetch the wood.
