The sheet shows several vertical strips of geometric tattoo designs, including arrows built from stacked triangles, diamond motifs and zigzag bands. The strips are arranged in a balanced column layout on a plain white background, with a small product code printed in one corner.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Edwin had been ruling the same stepped band for three days, and the abbot had stopped asking when it would be finished. The border of the Ashby psalter needed a column of diamonds down its outer margin, each one filled with gold bought from a Lincoln merchant in exchange for a winter's worth of salted herring. Edwin laid each leaf with a damp brush and a held breath, and watched the triangles settle into the vellum like frost on a window.

The silver was the trouble. The house had one book of silver leaf left, and he had spent half of it on the arrows that climbed the margin on either side of the text, pairs of stacked triangles pointing upward, the same mark the masons cut above doorways to say this way. He had drawn them with a compass the prior had forbidden in the choir. When the last sheet tore in his fingers, he cut the rest with the kitchen shears, and the offcuts curled on the bench like sweet-paper.

Brother Osric came in at vespers with a candle and found him kneeling over the psalter, bright scraps still clinging to his sleeve. He did not ask about the silver. He studied the arrows for a long while, every point turned toward the scriptorium door, and then he said the postern gate had been unbarred that morning for the carter from Louth and no one had yet thought to bar it again.

Edwin wiped the brush on his habit, laid the pen in its tray, and took up the lamp. The final arrow in the margin was still wet, its point running off the edge of the page, and he left it that way.
