A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ferry gets in at ten past nine, and by half past the sheets are already sliding off the rack. My uncle Teodor ordered them by the box from a man in Sheffield who never once wrote a letter that wasn't about invoices, and we sell them from the kiosk at the end of the jetty for whatever the tourists think a sun is worth.

The sun ones go first, always. Gold, with rays a child would draw if you asked her for a sun and gave her a foil pen. The diamond bands and chevrons are for people who want to look like they've come from somewhere further off. Nobody buys the hamsa hand for what it means. They buy it because it looks striking against the sea behind it. I tell them it lasts a week. Gold lasts four days if you swim every morning, silver a little longer, and black is the only one that won't fade before you're home.

My mother sold these from the same kiosk before she left on the hydrofoil with a man who repaired outboard motors. She didn't take the till drawer, and I found a sun sheet pressed flat under the cash tray the first summer I ran the stall. I never sold it. This year a girl asked why I kept the ones nobody wanted, and I said they were for later.

On the last evening I peeled that sheet from its backing and carried it down to the slipway. I pressed it to the back of my hand and wet it with sea water, the way the packet says. It came away in one piece, bright as a coin, and I watched the tide take it out past the breakwater.
