Metallic temporary tattoo sheet with om and lotus

Botanical · Hand · Colour · Flash

A sheet of metallic gold and bronze temporary tattoo designs sits on a light background, showing an om symbol, a lotus, and two mandala-style motifs. An inset photo shows gold and silver versions of similar designs with geometric bands, triangles and chevrons applied across a wrist and the back of a hand. The linework is solid and reflective, with no shading, and the composition places the sheet in the foreground with the inset in the upper right.

Dilys had stopped counting the lions the week the big top sold its last canvas panel to a scrapyard in Wigan. What remained was four elephants that no longer performed, a ringmaster who drank his tea from a flask, and a wardrobe trailer that smelled of sequins and paraffin. Tonight the tent would be half empty again, so she sat on an upturned crate with a sheet of gold transfers across her knee, peeling the backing paper with the patience of someone defusing something.

The om symbol came off first, then the lotus, then the two mandalas, each one lifting into shimmer under the caged bulb. Her brother Owen had bought the sheets from a market stall in Leeds for a pound a packet, certain the children would queue for them. They had queued, once, at a fete in Pontefract. Now the only audience was the trapeze girl, who was sixteen and wanted a silver chevron along her forearm before the matinee.

Dilys pressed the foil down with a damp sponge, counting ten seconds the way her mother had taught her, and lifted the film away. The lotus held, bright as a coin. The girl turned to the light and laughed for the first time that week, a sound that carried all the way to the empty rows.

Outside, the ringmaster rang the bell for the last time, though nobody had told him it was the last time yet. Dilys wiped her fingers on her apron and found a thin gold line still clinging to her thumb, and she decided to leave it there. Whatever came next, somebody would have to go on shining.
