Small butterfly on the forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small butterfly with outstretched wings sits on the inner forearm, close to the wrist. The wings are rendered in soft grey shading with darker tones along the edges and body, giving a slightly faded, delicate appearance. The butterfly is centred on a plain light background, and three metallic beaded bracelets are worn on the wrist above it.

One October a boy called Ezra Pell came round the back with a cough and a shilling, wanting to know why the thing didn't fly. Dolly told him it had been caught on the morning the last show closed in Hull, and it had been waiting ever since for the weather to tell it the season was done. He laughed at her, the way boys do, and reached through the flap for the jar. The butterfly lifted its wings once, slow as a clock, and settled on the back of his hand.
Dolly took the shilling and gave it back. She said the creature only ever rode out on a hand that had something to carry. Ezra went home that night and found a folded paper in his coat pocket, a map of every road he would drive for the rest of his life, and at the bottom, in her spidery pen, a line that said the jar was his now and he was to let the thing go at the first frost. He did. It came down on the cold grass by the gate and stayed there, wings spread, until the morning came and the whole fair was packed up and gone.
