Gold metallic temporary tattoos on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A woman wears gold metallic temporary tattoos on her forearm and wrist, with a long scrolling paisley-style pattern running from the wrist towards the elbow and a second band of lace-like ornament further up. The fine, symmetrical linework is rendered in a flat metallic gold rather than ink. The background is a bright beach, and the ornate coin necklace and stacked rings echo the metallic colour.

Dear Nell, the foil arrived on Tuesday in a tin that smelt of machine oil, and I have spent three evenings cutting paisley out of it with your good scissors, which I am sorry for. Mr Okafor at the coconut shy wants a hundred strips for the girls who work the sea front, the sort that lift off with a damp thumb and leave gold on the skin for a day. I told him the shine would not last past one bath. He said that was rather the point.

The coins are the trouble. Old Hasan kept a sack of them under the ticket booth, Ottoman and Venetian and some with a face nobody on the fairground could name, and he would not let me melt a single one. So I traced the pattern from the lace collar he brought up from Smyrna, every pierced hole and scroll copied by hand, and I let the curl that runs down from the wrist go the way a vine goes when nobody is watching. It came out better than I could have managed in ink.

On Saturday the wind came in off the bay and took the whole rack. Forty strips went up over the dodgems like gulls. A boy from the rides chased them along the prom shouting, and I stood by the empty trestle thinking that was the end of the season. Three weeks later a postcard arrived from a café in Ostend with no name on it, only a pencil sketch of a forearm with a band of gold ornament, and underneath, in careful capitals: FOUND ON THE TIDELINE. STILL SHINING.

I have kept the postcard in the till drawer. Tell Hasan the coins are safe. I have folded one spare strip inside this letter so you can see how bright it is in a bad light. Yours, Tomas
