Michigan outline with wing on upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A solid red tattoo shows the outline of the state of Michigan with a wing shape filled in inside its lower half. It sits on the outer upper arm of a woman with long blonde hair, photographed from the chest down so no face is visible. The ink is a single red tone, and the red t-shirt and belt sit in the same warm palette around the tattoo.

The ink would not dry before the messenger came up the stairs, so Teodra blew on the page and swore softly in the old tongue, the one her grandmother used for lost sheep and bad weather.

The king wanted the western coast redrawn by the first frost. Since the flood had taken the bridge at Carrow, the mitten-shaped realm of Hallamoor had lost its thumb to the lake, and the court wanted the border set straight again, neat as a ruled line. Teodra had drawn a hundred coastlines and never once let a bird into them. Yet the lower half of the map held a feather-shaped bay that the sailors called the Wing, and she had always liked it better than the harbour charts.

She dipped the brush in the red lake-ink her brother sent from the southern works, the only colour that held through a wet winter. Gareth had gone over the water three springs ago with a letter sealed in red wax, and a gull had brought back the reply, folded so small it fitted beneath its wing. Nobody at court believed in gulls who carried letters. Teodra did, and she filled the bay in solid red, from the sandbar to the cliffs, until the shape sat on the parchment as if it had flown there on purpose.

When the messenger finally stooped over the table, he frowned at the wing and opened his mouth to object. Teodra handed him the map without a word. He looked at the red shape for a long while, then rolled the parchment shut, tucked it under his arm, and went down the stairs with the border exactly as she had drawn it.
