Small smiley face on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A very small black smiley face with a winking eye and a wry grin sits on the inner forearm, near the elbow. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is a solid dark grey-black. The arm is shown against a pale wall, with the tattoo as the clear focal point beside a cropped view of the torso and jeans.

Nobody saw who did it. Night staff swore it was the cleaners, the cleaners swore it was the porters, and I swore it was the ghost of old Mr Haddow, who'd been on that ward since the Coronation and never once let a bell ring twice. Every night the face was there at three, and every morning somebody rubbed at it with spirit and by the next shift it had crept back, cheeky as ever.
Then in February the lift jammed between floors with a student midwife and a man bringing up a tray of blood bags. Forty minutes in the dark, the emergency light buzzing like a wasp in a jar. When the engineer finally got the doors open, the student was laughing and the face was there, fresh, winking at them through the glass. She told me later it was the only thing in that box that made any sense. So we left it alone. Some nights a wink is the whole of the job.
