Red dripping band on upper arm
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A photograph of a woman with long dark hair in a grey t-shirt, showing a red band tattoo wrapped around her upper arm. The band has a solid fill with no visible shading, and its lower edge runs into rounded drips of varying length. The red ink is the dominant colour against the skin, and the background is an indoor room with a dark surface on the right.

The tin had been open since Tuesday, and by Thursday the skin on the paint had wrinkled like a dried plum. Frank Oduya shook it anyway, the ball rattling inside, and told the lad to stop fidgeting with the masking tape. The carousel at the end of the pier had a band of red along its lower rim, a ring of crimson the colour of a pillar box, and three summers of salt wind had faded it to the pink of boiled sweets.

Nell had been given the brush because she had steady hands and no opinions yet. She worked the bristles along the edge where the old paint met the new, and the gloss ran ahead of her in a slow bead. Frank wanted one coat and no fussing. Every time she lifted the brush, a thin tongue of paint slid down the painted wood and hung there, swelling, reluctant to let go.
By the afternoon the band was finished, and the drips had set into long rounded tongues below it, some as long as a finger. Frank walked the length of the carousel with his hands in his pockets and stopped at the seventh panel. He said nothing for a while. Then he sent the lad for a rag.
Nell waited for him to scrape them off. Instead he crouched in the sawdust, studied the runs against the light coming in off the sea, and said the families who came down from the Midlands every August would think it had been done by a man with a grudge and a good eye. He stood, dusted his knees, and told her to leave the last one exactly as it was.
