Mickey balloon and Mickey sparkles on feet
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two bare feet rest on a black and white patterned fabric, each with a small tattoo. The left foot has an outlined Mickey Mouse head shaped like a balloon, with a thin string trailing down, while the right foot has an outlined Mickey Mouse head with three small sparkles beside it. The thin, even black linework has no shading or colour, and the bright red toenail polish is the only other colour in the frame.

Every morning at Harrowmere the stationmaster's girl, Nell Pardew, tied a balloon to the ticket hatch and blew it up herself. Her father said a balloon was no use to a platform and the wind would only take it. Nell said the wind could have it when it asked properly. The balloon had two round ears at the top, drawn in one thin black line, and a string that trailed down to the sleepers like a dropped thread.

The evening train came in at six with a whistle and a shake of steam. One night a man in a grey coat stepped down, looked at the balloon for a long time, and asked the way to the sea. Nell told him the sea was past the water tower and a day's walk beyond. He said he had walked further for less. She offered him the end of the string so he would remember the way back, and he laughed and did not take it.
In October a gale came off the cutting and the string slipped through her cold fingers. Nell ran the length of the platform while the balloon rose past the signal box, past the water tower, and out over the level crossing. Three small sparks lit beside its ears as it climbed into the frost, the way a match catches in a dark room. Her father stood still with his cap in his hands. The porter swore afterwards that it was only frost.
Years later a letter came to the station addressed to the girl with the balloon. It was from a coast town, with a drawing inside of the same round-eared shape, a thin line trailing from it, and one word written underneath: back. Nell pinned it above the ticket hatch. Each morning after that she tied a fresh string to the hook and waited, with the wind at her back, for the line to go taut.
