She was small and grey, with ears as round as thimbles, and she wore a bow of red ribbon tied on top of her head, the way a girl might for market day. Each night she took one oat from the store and left a dried pea on the step. Each morning Mabs found the pea and said nothing. Will counted the sacks and swore the store was short, but never by much.

In February the snow shut the lane for nine days. The bread ran out on the fourth. On the seventh morning Mabs found the pea on the step, and beside it a single pale seed of barley, the first of the spring seed, carried through the drift in the mouse's mouth. Mabs understood then what the peas had been for.

She sowed the barley in the top field where the frost lay longest, and it came up thin and green. The mouse stopped coming to the store after that. Every winter since, a red bow has turned up knotted to the gatepost, and Mabs has never once asked who tied it.
