Matching Mickey Mouse wrist tattoos
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two wrists are shown side by side, each with a Mickey Mouse head design. The tattoo on the left is a thin black outline with a small solid heart near the ear, while the one on the right is a solid black silhouette with a heart left as negative space. The black and grey ink sits on a light background with a plain, uncluttered composition.

Dilys cut the stencil before the kettle, because the coach to Halsey Bay left at nine and her sister would not wait for anybody's second cup. Three circles and a jaw, drawn freehand on thermal paper, the same shape every stall on the pier had pinned above the till. She pressed too hard on the last ear and the blade slipped, leaving a small clean hole where the ear met the head.

Mae sat on the fold-out chair with her sleeve pushed up and read the back of a bingo card while the machine warmed. "Make it proper," she said. "Not the bit above the till. Something only we'd get." Dilys looked at the hole, then at the shape, and saw that the gap sat exactly where a heart would lean against the ear like a shoulder against a door.
The man who ran the room was called Ruan, and he had been tattooing since before either of them could drive. He laid the transfer on Mae's wrist, peeled it back, and said the outline would last longer if she kept her hand still on the coach. Dilys took the second stencil, pressed it to her own skin, and asked him to fill her shape solid, all the way to the edge, so the only light left in it was the heart.
On the ferry the next morning they stood at the rail with their wrists together, one pale line and one dark mass, the small pale heart sitting in each like a thing they had agreed on without saying so. Mae said the sea looked like a cheap print. Dilys said it looked like the wrong colour for a mouse. Neither of them laughed, but they both kept their hands where the other could see them.
