Nell wouldn't steer a boat without her bow tied to the tiller, and for eleven years I let her have it. The other boaters at Calder Junction laughed, the way they laugh at anything that moves slower than a bicycle, but the bow was red with white spots and it flapped like a signal flag every time we came round a bend.

The summer the cut closed for repairs, we were stuck on the wrong side of the junction with nowhere to go. There was no lock to pass through, only water doubling back on itself. Nell said we'd make a loop of it, out past the boatyard, round the old coal wharf and back under the bridge, and so we did, day after day, a figure of eight drawn in brown water with our cabin lamp lit at night. The bow snapped in the wind at every turn.

On the fourth morning a lock keeper came down the towpath with a clipboard and a flask and asked what on earth we were doing. Nell told him we were waiting for the gate. He said the gate had been open since Tuesday and we'd been circling a mooring we had already passed. She laughed until she had to sit on the roof, and I understood she had known it the whole time.

We went through that afternoon. Later, when the paint had dried on the new gates, I found the bow folded inside the tiller cover, and beside it a pencilled loop on the back of a towpath leaflet, the two halves crossing where we had crossed. Under it she had written one word, pressed hard enough to dent the card: again.
