Mickey Mouse and spiky-haired character outlines
Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
The left tattoo is an outline of Mickey Mouse with a small crown above the ear, and the right is an outline of a spiky-haired character in profile with a matching crown. Both use thin, even black linework with no shading, and the wider composition shows the two designs side by side on the skin. The image is entirely black ink on skin with a blue background behind the legs.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Tobias had painted the sign at the Lantern Motel for eleven summers and was paid mostly in tins of peaches and bent nails. When a dust storm rolled over the flats in August, it was the boy from the petrol station, Ferris Hale, who knocked on his door with a jar of ink and a stencil he had cut from a cereal box. "Two crowns," Ferris said. "One each, so the road knows who's who." Tobias said the road had never cared who was who, but he sat on the back step anyway while the storm hissed against the shutters. He traced a round-eared shape onto Ferris's shin, and Ferris drew a spiky silhouette onto Tobias's, each with a small crown hovering above like a sign that had lost its lettering.

The ink had dried by morning. The storm blew itself out, leaving the highway scoured and bright, and a long grey car pulled up asking for directions to a place called the Second Lantern. Neither of them had heard of it. Ferris pointed west and Tobias pointed east, and the driver laughed, said the crowns were a fine way to disagree, and drove off without choosing either.
They argued about it for years, on the step and at the counter and once in the middle of the road with a cattle guard between them. In the end they nailed a board to the fence post at the fork, painted one arrow for each of them, and left the wind to decide. Tobias always said the wind had a better sense of direction than either of them. Ferris always said that was the only thing they had ever agreed on.
