Interlocking heart knot on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small black outline tattoo of three overlapping heart-shaped loops that interlock around a central point, forming a knot-like shape. The thin, even linework is in black ink with no shading or fill. The tattoo sits centrally on an ankle, with a purple patterned shoe at the bottom of the frame and a dark leather surface behind.

Mrs Tulley kept a biro on a length of string beside the guest book at Gull Rest, the boarding house on Sallow Terrace where the sea wind rattled the letterbox all day. Most lodgers signed in and forgot it. Mr Pkey, in room four, used it for drawing. He stayed three weeks that February, paying in coins he counted onto the hall table, and each evening he sat by the lounge radiator sketching one shape over and over on the backs of bills.

I was fourteen and meant to be dusting the banisters. Instead I leaned on the newel post and watched. Three hearts, he said, each looping through the other two so they met around a small hollow in the middle. His wife had drawn it on a ferry ticket the summer before she went into hospital in Leeds. 'You never lift the pen,' he said, not looking up. 'Go round three times and you end up back where you started, only not quite the same.' My attempt on a menu came out as a tangle with loose ends.
The gales came at the end of the month and the attic pipes froze. On the morning Mr Pkey left, his room was stripped and cold, but on the pillow lay a registration card with the shape drawn in one black, even line, the start and finish touching without a join. Underneath he had written: Keep going round.
The card lives in my kitchen drawer now. Most nights I take the biro from its string and try again, and most nights the line snags at the third loop. Last Sunday, with the kettle singing and the window full of grey water, I got all the way round without stopping, and the ink came home to where it began.
