Small outline bow on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small bow is drawn in a single black outline on the inside of the wrist, with a loop on each side, a knot at the centre and two trailing ends. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black. The bow sits off-centre on the wrist against a plain pale background, with the raised hand filling the upper part of the frame.

The lift in Hadley House had been out since Tuesday, so Ruth Okafor carried the shoebox up eleven flights with her thumb hooked under the lid. Inside was a length of green silk ribbon, the last of her mother's haberdashery stock, and a card in Arnold Pryce's careful capitals asking for one bow, tied properly, for his granddaughter's christening on Sunday.

On the landing between eleven and twelve she found Mr Dunne from fourteen sitting on the step with his bad knee stuck out straight. He watched her unroll the ribbon across the concrete and said his late wife used to tie his shoelaces into bows that came undone by lunchtime. Ruth told him her mother had taught her the loop-and-cross method, and that the whole trick was in the evenness of the loops, because a lopsided bow tells everyone the person who made it was in a hurry.
She knelt and worked the silk between her fingers, two loops, a cross, the tails pulled long. The first attempt slid apart. The second puckered. On the third she swore under her breath, and Mr Dunne passed her a biro without being asked so she could hold the centre firm while she tightened. The fourth held, flat and symmetrical, the tails falling at the same angle like they had been measured with a ruler.
She slid it onto the card and pressed the box lid shut. Mr Dunne leaned over to inspect it, then looked at her for a long moment. "Even loops," he said. "Nobody hurrying there."
