Clef heart tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Colour · Photo

A small heart outline is formed by a treble clef on the left and a bass clef on the right, drawn in thin blue-purple linework. The lines are even and the design is shown in close-up against a dark leather surface. The tattoo sits centrally on the finger, with the rest of the hand and fingers softly out of focus at the edges of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fog horn on Skerry Nab had been sounding flat since the February gale, and my father would let no one near it but himself, so I was the one who carried the wrapped piano lid up the cliff path that Tuesday, cursing the weight of it and the gulls that followed me up the steps.

Inside the lid, pressed flat between the felt and the wood, were eleven sheets of hand-ruled music. Someone had drawn two clefs on every page, a treble curling up on the left and a bass hooking down on the right, and where they met they had made a heart. The flyleaf named Ambrose Feeney, organist at the chapel in Penhallow until his hands gave out. Beside the bass line he had pencilled the initials of a woman called Morwenna and the word for tomorrow, as if he had meant to play it to her and never got the chance.

I took the sheets to the lamp room because it was the only place with a proper table. My father found me there at dusk with a pencil behind my ear, trying to match the bass line to the horn's bellow. He stood in the doorway a long while. Then he said the horn had been waiting for a key signature since before either of us was born.

We set the horn to the first bar that night. When the fog rolled in off the water it sounded almost like a hymn, long and low and steady, the kind a boat could steer by.
