Mickey Mouse silhouette in rainbow wash

Ankle · Colour · Photo

The tattoo is a Mickey Mouse head silhouette, shown as an empty shape with its interior left as bare skin. The outline is not a solid line but a soft, feathered band of pink, orange, yellow, teal and blue that fades out at the edges. The photograph is taken close up on the ankle above a white canvas sneaker, against a blurred outdoor background.

Hold the card flat against the side of the dodgem booth, the way Lil showed you, or the colour creeps under the edge and you get a smudge instead of a line. It is the last night of the Michaelmas fair and there is nobody else to hold it. The stencil is a head with two round ears, cut from a feed-sack card that has gone soft at the corners, and Lil works the airbrush with her tongue between her teeth while the waltzer groans behind the tent.

The colours go on in order: pink first, then orange, yellow, teal and blue. Each one breathes a little past the cut edge so the whole shape seems lit from inside. Lil says the trick is to stop the paint just short of the frame, and you keep thinking about the kids who will stand here tomorrow, pointing at the board from the road. You have been at this since four. Your wrist aches and the air smells of cellulose and candyfloss.

The generator coughs and dies in the middle of the blue. For a moment the whole field is dark, and in that dark you can see the sign properly for the first time, the coloured band glowing faintly against the night. Lil reaches out and stops your hand before you touch the centre with the masking tape. "Leave that bit," she says. "Nobody comes to a fair to look at what's already in the picture."

In the morning the lorries pull out and the sign stays behind on a hoarding in a Kent field. Rain softens the blue to a bruise and runs the pink into the grass. The middle, bare board with the grain showing, stays dry under the eaves, the one clean shape the weather has not got to yet.
