Infinity symbol with watercolour wash on wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A small infinity symbol sits on the inner wrist, drawn in thin black linework. The loops are filled with soft watercolour-style washes in yellow, orange, green and blue, with a faint red bleed trailing from the left loop. The photo is taken from above on a pale wooden surface, with the colour fading softly against the skin.

The snow had shut the Crowfoot Inn's road for three days, and Ivy Harker had run out of paper by the second. She tore the blank pages from the back of the ledger instead, because the landlord's daughter, Nell, said nobody would miss them. Outside, the fells had gone the colour of wet pewter, and the window behind the settle held nothing but the same white.

Each evening she pinned the day's sketches to the beam above the hearth, and each morning she took them down again, because the light changed what she had seen. The guests were a carrier from Kendal, two sheep farmers who played cribbage without speaking, and a widowed vicar who asked whether she was painting the weather or the waiting. She told him neither. She was painting the loop of the thing: one wash of lemon, a second of marigold dropped in before it dried, then a bead of teal that wanted to run off the edge of the page.

On the fourth morning the thaw began with a drip from the eaves, steady as a clock. Ivy stopped trying to hold the colour still. She let the red bleed off the left loop like a cut lip into the paper and let the blue splash where it pleased. Nell found her at the window with the brushes cleaned and the water jar tipped out on the sill.

"They'll have the road dug by noon," Nell said. "You'll be off."

"I will," Ivy said, and turned the page over so the wet side faced the fire. The figure eight had dried into a single unbroken thing, the black line running round and round and meeting itself where the colours ran out. She thought she might come back in January and find it still there.
