Two tattoos side by side: a black microphone on a finger held near a chin, and typewriter-style POWER lettering with a teal female symbol on a forearm.

Microphone on finger and POWER lettering on forearm

Lettering · Hand · Mixed · Photo

The left panel shows a small black microphone tattooed on the side of a finger, held beside a partly visible chin and lips, with soft shading in greys. The right panel shows the word POWER in bold, distressed typewriter-style capitals on the inside of a forearm, with the letter O replaced by a teal female symbol. The image is a close, evenly lit crop against a plain skin tone and a blurred background.

Last night we held the meeting in the dining room, the one with the sea-damp wallpaper. Someone had borrowed the pier's loudhailer, a squat black microphone on a curly lead, and it passed from table to table like a hot potato. Eight of us spoke. The Hendersons' girl sang a verse of something rude from the music hall, and we all pretended not to laugh.

The landlord has been told we are withholding payments until the boiler is mended. He came round this morning in his good coat and stood in the hall looking out at the grey sea through the glass, and I think he understood then that we were not going to be quiet any more. I will post this with the last stamp in the drawer, the one with the old King on it. Come in August. The room at the top is ours if we want it, and I find I do. Your loving sister, Maud.
