Small red heart on the inner wrist
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small, solid red heart with a thin dark outline sits on the inner wrist of an open hand held palm up. The heart is filled with flat red ink and has a slightly darker red shade along one side. The plain grey backdrop keeps the focus on the tattoo and the skin.

The lamp had been dark for eleven minutes when Ada Penhallow found the red glass cracked. She knelt on the iron gallery with a rag in one hand and her brother's pocketknife in the other, working the old putty loose from the sector panes while sleet drove sideways past the rail. Below, the sea came in white over the Scarrow reef, and somewhere past it was the Marigold, three days overdue.

Harold Penhallow had taught her the wick, the brass clockwork that turned the great lens, and the dawn log, but never the glazier's trade. The replacement pane had come from Penzance in a crate packed with straw, and it was the wrong red, too orange, the colour of a rusted buoy. She held it to the lamp and the beam came through as a warm smear on the water that no fisherman would trust.
So she traced a template onto the back of the logbook cover and went at the glass with a cutting wheel and a bucket of cold water. Hours passed. Her knuckles bled into her cuffs. Near dawn she fitted a new pane, a deep clean red, and pressed the putty down with her thumb until it held. When she relit the wick, the red sector swept out over the grey water like a held breath.
At full light a boat came round the headland under a patched sail, low in the water. Ada counted the crew twice. Then she wrote in the log in her small careful hand: Red sector restored. Marigold home. Beneath it, because nobody would ever read it but her, she drew a tiny heart in the margin, the same red as the lamp.
