Milhouse cartoon on a banner, top of foot

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

A bold cartoon of Milhouse from The Simpsons is tattooed on the top of a foot, shown with a blue cap, round glasses, purple shirt and blue trousers, arms raised. He stands on a ribbon banner below that reads EVERYTHING'S COMING UP in outlined lettering. The thick black outlines and flat areas of solid colour give the piece a classic cartoon look against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dennis Pargeter had been told by three separate people that the bridge was condemned, and he took this as a sign the council was finally paying attention to the bridge. He stood on the kerb at half six with a cardboard tube under one arm and a flask of tea wedged into his coat, waiting for the bus to the interview at Brackley Cold Storage. His cap was new. His round glasses had been wiped on his jumper so often they were more smear than glass, which he considered a kind of polish.

The interview went badly in the way interviews go badly for optimists. The manager asked where he saw himself in five years, and Dennis flung his arms wide, the way his mum taught him to greet cousins, and said everything was coming up. Behind him a forklift reversed into a pallet of frozen peas. Nobody hired him, but the manager gave him a sausage roll from a paper bag and told him to go home before he hurt himself, which Dennis counted as the best feedback he had ever received.

On the walk back along the river he found a banner of sodden paper caught on a railing, half of it gone, the words still legible: EVERYTHING'S COMING UP. Someone had painted it for a fair that had been cancelled. He rolled it up with his CV and felt, for the first time that week, that the universe was on his side in a small and practical way. That night the tide rose over the bridge's warning signs and carried them out to sea, and Dennis slept soundly on the hill above, dreaming of bright, unhurried weather.
