The design shows a cartoon character with a bald head and blue top, shown with an open mouth, beside a pink flower and sprigs of green leaves. Beneath sits the phrase WORST TATTOO EVER in black lettering, with the words in a mix of capitals and script-style strokes. The tattoo uses bold black outlines with flat colour fills, and the composition is tightly framed on a section of skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody on Halfway Reach had seen a man scowl the way the inker Tobiah Quill scowled when the first ink-bird of the season came out spoiled. He threw the needle into the brine tub and said the sea itself had done this to him, then went out onto the salt flats to sulk.

The story goes that the ship's cook, Mother Ansel, carried a grey tin of old skin-pictures from before the drowning years. Inside was a picture of a round, bald man in a blue jumper who opened his mouth wide, as though the world had just told him something untrue. Under him the tin read WORST TATTOO EVER in letters that wobbled like wet rope. Ansel said the old people used such pictures to teach the young what not to do, and that the letters were a warning printed in ink.

Quill did not take it as a warning. He copied the bald man onto the inside of his own forearm with a sharpened gull quill and a pot of squid ink. Beside him he drew a pink flower and two green sprigs, because the flowers on Halfway Reach were the only things that grew in spite of the wind. Then he wrote the words beneath in the crooked hand his mother had taught him.

When the village came to look, they laughed until the gulls lifted off the roofs. Quill laughed too, the first time in a year. He kept his sleeve rolled down after that, and the bald man stayed on the inside of his arm, opening his mouth at the weather and saying what everyone had been thinking all along.
